The West Linn Summer That Only Locals Actually Plan Around

If you've lived in West Linn for more than a season, you already know the town runs on two summer clocks that rarely sync. One belongs to Willamette Park down at 1100 12th Street, where the city stacks its big-ticket weekends. The other belongs to the Historic Willamette district up on Willamette Falls Drive, where the calendar moves week by week from a folding table on Knapps Alley. The interesting story of summer 2026 is that the food scene along Willamette Drive is finally starting to knit those two poles together.

Here's the case for paying attention to that stitching before Labor Day.

Two poles, five minutes apart

The city-run events cluster around the river. The 70th Annual Old Time Fair takes over Willamette Park July 10 through 12, with the parade rolling down Willamette Falls Drive on Saturday, July 11 at 10 a.m. Music in the Park runs Thursday nights at Tanner Creek Park on Parker Road, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., every week from July 23 through August 20. Movies in the Park screens back at Willamette Park on August 4, 11, and 18, starting at dusk. All of it is free, and parking is free at the fair too.

The merchant-led rhythm belongs to Historic Willamette. Wednesdays in Willamette, the summer street market, runs 4 to 8 p.m. every week from May 13 through September 9, anchored on Knapps Alley. WillametteFest debuts October 4, and the Chalk Walk Festival returns September 12, both on Willamette Falls Drive, but the summer core is those Wednesday evenings.

The summer at a glance

Two things worth noticing in that grid. First, the fair still runs a pancake breakfast, a water ski show, an Olde Time Baseball Game, lumberjack competitions, a Mutt & Pet Show, and a pie-eating contest. It is not a nostalgia set piece; the water ski show alone is worth walking down for. Second, the July 11 parade route means anyone eating breakfast on Willamette Falls Drive that morning has a front-row seat without leaving their table. Here's the part of the summer story that hasn't shown up in most local coverage yet. Three separate restaurant moves are landing within a short stretch of Willamette Drive at roughly the same time, and together they change what a weeknight looks like on this side of town.

White Orchid Thai soft-opened its new location at 19349 Willamette Drive on April 24, 2026. Same operator, larger footprint on the main commercial corridor.

Fast Times Pizzeria is coming to 18750 Willamette Drive, Suite A, taking over the space that Old Backyard Burgers Company vacated last September. The concept is New York-style slices plus soft serve, run by Matt Jacobson, one of the founders of Sizzle Pie. The first location opened last year at 624 E. Burnside Street in Portland, inside the original Sizzle Pie space. No firm opening date yet, but Bridgetown Bites has it projected for summer 2026. The relevant local detail: this corridor has been thin on late-night options, and a slice-and-cone shop is a different animal from the sit-down places that dominate the district.

Nuevo Mazatlan is also projected for a summer 2026 West Linn opening according to the same tracker.

Stack that against the incumbents that already anchor the corridor. Five-0-Three keeps its patio open May through October, with live music, which puts it in direct calendar competition with Music in the Park on Thursdays. Avanti Restaurant & Bar sits just off I-205 at the 10th Street exit and pulls a different crowd. Nineteen 33 Taproom and Taste Wine Cafe handle the small-plates and wine end. What was missing was casual, walk-up, late-ish food on the main drag. That is the gap the Fast Times concept is aimed at.

The practical read for someone who already lives here: the food density along Willamette Drive is quietly moving from "destination restaurants with reservations" toward something closer to a strollable evening. That is the same corridor the parade uses, the same corridor that dead-ends near the Historic Willamette market blocks, and the same corridor you'd use to get from Tanner Creek Park back home after a Thursday concert.

How a real West Linn week actually strings together

Here is where the two-poles observation stops being trivia and starts being a plan. A single mid-summer week between July 22 and July 26 gives you:

• Wednesday, 4–8 p.m. — Historic Willamette street market on Knapps Alley. Vendors, dinner on foot, kids underfoot.
• Thursday, 6:30 p.m. — Music in the Park kicks off its 2026 season at Tanner Creek Park with Petty Fever on July 23. Bring a low-back chair. Food and drink from local vendors on site, so you do not need to eat before.
• Friday–Sunday, July 10–12 — If we back the clock up two weeks, the Old Time Fair covers a full weekend at Willamette Park. Weekend after the fair is quieter on the city calendar, which is when the Willamette Drive restaurants pick up the slack.

A note on the parade morning of July 11: the route runs Willamette Falls Drive from roughly 11th to 14th, then over to 5th Avenue between 12th and 14th. If you live inside that box, plan your Saturday errands for the afternoon. If you live outside it, walk in and grab a table on the Drive before 9:30.

The through-line is that the city events give you your anchor nights, and the merchant district gives you your fill-in nights. Neither of them alone is a full summer. Together they are.

What the newcomers along the corridor tell us

Zoom out from the calendar for a second. When a national-adjacent concept like Fast Times chooses a space on Willamette Drive over a busier Portland corner, it is reading the same signal a homeowner in Robinwood or Parker Crest already knows: this corridor has enough foot traffic on a Wednesday market night and a Thursday concert night to carry a casual, non-reservation format. That was not obviously true two years ago.

The same logic applies to White Orchid's move to 19349 Willamette Drive and to Nuevo Mazatlan's projected debut. Three independent operators betting on the same three-quarter mile of road inside the same six-month window is not coincidence. It is the corridor pricing itself in.

For anyone who has been in West Linn long enough to remember the Old Backyard Burgers space sitting dark last fall, that turnover matters. Vacancies on Willamette Drive tend to be short now. That is a small thing to notice, and it changes how the summer feels.

A few honest caveats

Opening dates for restaurants slip. Fast Times has no announced date, only a summer target. Nuevo Mazatlan is on the same soft timeline. If you are planning around a specific night, call ahead.

Music in the Park and Movies in the Park are outdoor and weather-dependent, though the July–August bright-overcast pattern here is usually kind to both. The fair happens rain or shine.

The point

West Linn has never been a town that packages its summer for you. The city puts on excellent free events at Willamette Park and Tanner Creek Park. Historic Willamette runs its own weekly economy on Willamette Falls Drive. The new food on Willamette Drive is the connective tissue that finally makes those two things feel like one summer instead of two overlapping ones. The residents who figure that out this July are the ones who will look back in September and feel like they actually got a season out of it.
